Geocode or hazard location

Geocodes or hazards the specified location.

A location is a property, building, business, or other asset that may be damaged by catastrophe events. Prior to risk analysis, a location must be enriched with geocoding or hazard lookup data.

This operation supports two distinct jobs, depending on the job type specified in the request body.

  • If geocode is specified for the type parameter, the operation geocodes the specified location.
  • If hazard is specified for the type parameter, the operation looks up hazard data for the specified location.

Geocoding

Geocoding enriches a location exposure with geolocation data that precisely identifies the global coordinates of a site. Geocoding is a prerequisite for all catastrophe modelling processes. A location may be geocoded at different resolution levels. The lower the resolution level, the more accurate the the location coordinates returned by the geocoding service.

Risk Modeler not only provides geocoding support for countries that have RMS catastrophe models, but also supports geocoding for a large number of countries where no models are currently available. The specific countries that can be geocoded depend on your organization's licensing agreements with RMS.

Hazard lookups

If hazard is specified for the type parameter, the operation looks up hazard data for the specified location.

The Hazard lookup retrieves data about local conditions and potential hazards for a location. Hazarding enriches a location exposure with risk data drawn from an RMS peril model database, a collection of site hazard values that characterize the vulnerability of a location to a catastrophe event. While some hazard data is required prior to analysis, other hazard data can be licensed and retrieved to help you further understand a location's risk. Hazard lookups are not performed for non-modeled countries.

Licensing

The Risk Modeler API supports the definition, importation, and geocoding of locations in over 230 countries. Locations may be geocoded in countries that have RMS catastrophe models and countries that have no models. Your ability to geocode locations in specific countries depend on your company’s licensing agreements with RMS.
